The Chicago Red Stars suffered a setback in their quest to reach the playoffs, falling to the Boston Breakers, 1-0, in Women’s Professional Soccer play Wednesday at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.
Chicago (4-7-5) had a huge 21-11 shots advantage, but the Breakers (6-6-3) held the edge on goal, with the game’s lone tally coming from Angela Hucles in the 35th minute. Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson (pictured) made five saves, while Breakers goalkeeper Alison Lipsher made four for the clean sheet.
Only four regular-season games remain, and the Red Stars are tied for fifth in WPS with the Washington Freedom with 17 points apiece. The team currently holding the fourth and final playoff spot, Sky Blue FC, is next on the docket for the Red Stars this Sunday.
Chicago will be dramatically shorthanded this weekend with four Red Stars on National Team duty: Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Lindsay Tarpley for the U.S. WNT, and Karen Carney for England.
Next up: The Red Stars conclude their mini road trip with a 3:30 p.m. (CST) match on Sunday, July 19, against Sky Blue FC at Yurcak Stadium in Piscataway, N.J. The game is televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
