Chicago tries to continue climb in WPS standings
Just getting a victory was the hardest part, putting an end to a month-long drought for the Chicago Red Stars. Now that they have a well-played game to latch onto, they head into Sunday’s match against FC Gold Pride with some confidence.
Chicago’s Women’s Professional Soccer game starts at 7 p.m. at Toyota Park (televised on Comcast SportsNet, Web cast on ChicagoRedStars.com).
The Red Stars (3-6-5) are ahead of last-place FC Gold Pride (3-7-3), but the Bay Area squad has performed well against Chicago this season. FC Gold Pride had a 1-0 victory on May 16 at Toyota Park. And they held a 1-0 lead until Cristiane salvaged a draw in the second half of a 1-all affair on June 7 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Christine Sinclair posted both FC Gold Pride goals.
Only six regular-season games remain for the Red Stars, and this game is vital since the team will be without four of its best players for the two games afterward. Lindsay Tarpley, Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd will be playing for the U.S. Women’s National Team in two exhibitions, and Karen Carney will be joining England’s club.
This game will be a special event off the field in remembrance of the U.S.’s World Cup victory in 1999. The Red Stars are also holding a special deal for 99-cent tickets. Visit ChicagoRedStars.com for more information.
