Eclipse Select's Stuenkel of St. Charles headed to Iowa in 2014

CHICAGO (April 5, 2013) –Eclipse Select Soccer Club midfielder Karly Stuenkel (St. Charles, Ill.) wanted to find a strong college program, big college setting and a hometown feel. That destination proved to be Iowa City as she committed to play for the University of Iowa beginning in the fall of 2014.

“I’m so happy to be going there and have the chance to play in the Big Ten,” Stuenkel said. “I’m really excited that they showed this much interest in me.”

Louisville also was a top choice on Stuenkel’s radar, but she said she meshed well with the Hawkeyes program.

“Both schools take care of their athletes, and with Iowa I just clicked with their coaching staff,” Stuenkel said. “It was so nice, and they have taken that program and brought it up. I liked that. I realized how much I loved the school campus, and that it’s a big school but in a small type of city that reminds me of my hometown.”

Four Eclipse Select alumni picked at inaugural 2013 NWSL Draft

CHICAGO -- Reflective of their high-caliber club and collegiate careers, four Eclipse Select Soccer Club alumni were chosen among the 32 players at the 2013 National Women's Soccer League College Draft held on Friday at the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis.

The highest-picked representative from Eclipse Select at the draft was midfielder/defender Casey Short (Naperville, Ill.), who was the No. 5 overall selection by the Boston Breakers.

"It's such an incredible opportunity. It's a dream come true," Short said. "I've always dreamed of being able to play professionally, and to be playing with some of the best players in the country that I've looked up to all my life, I'm so blessed and excited for this opportunity."

Chicago soccer fans will not have to travel too far to see two of Eclipse Select's own as defender Rachel Quon (Lake Forest, Ill.) and goalkeeper Taylor Vancil (South Elgin, Ill.) were picked by the Chicago Red Stars who are coached by Eclipse Select President Rory Dames.

Former Eclipse Select goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich.) was the 31st overall selection and a fourth-round pick by Seattle Reign FC.

Eclipse Select college commitment profile: 'Sam' Powers - Bucknell, 2013

CHICAGO -- The perfect symmetry between athletics and schooling is something that every college hopeful looks for, and Eclipse Select U-18 defender Samantha Powers (Gurnee, Ill.) says she found that blend with Bucknell.

Powers committed to Bucknell’s women’s soccer program in September and will be kicking off her first season with the Bison later this fall under head coach Ben Landis.

“I was just looking for schools that had a good balance with school work and a competitive soccer program, and they just continued to stay on the list,” Powers said. “I enjoyed speaking with Coach Landis and I felt really welcome. They continued to be my top choice, so I’m really excited to be joining the Bison.”

Eclipse Select U-15 USYSA Black advances to Nationals

The Eclipse Select U-15 USYSA Black Girls team stamped its ticket to the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships as the club performed exceptionally during its recent trip to Florida in both USYSA National League and Elite Clubs National League play over the past week and a half.

The U-15 USYSA Black team went 2-0-1 during its final three games of USYSA National League play from Dec. 31-Jan. 2, then defeated New Jersey, 2-0, on Thursday, Jan. 3, to win the Disney championship at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The U-15 USYSA Black team officially qualified for Nationals with its 4-0 victory against HYS Freedom (Va.) on Tuesday, Jan. 1, with Zoe Redei (Highland Park, Ill.) scoring two goals, Foster Ignoffo (Geneva, Ill.) adding a goal and Gabi Hart (Western Springs, Ill.) capping off the scoring.

Eclipse Select college commitment profile: Celeste Carlson - Xavier, 2013

Eclipse Select Soccer Club midfielder Celeste Carlson (Park Ridge, Ill.) relishes the responsibilities that come with her defensive center midfield role, and she is excited to be taking her game to the Atlantic 10's Xavier University for her 2013 freshman season.

"Like a lot of the girls, I came here to Eclipse wanting to play in college, and through years of hard practices and big games, to finally get that feeling that you've done it and accomplished that goal, it's undefinable," Carlson said. "I was in such shock."

Eclipse Select Soccer Club alumna and Valparaiso junior goalkeeper Kristen Manski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week after posting two shutout victories and eight saves.

Meanwhile, Illinois Wesleyan senior midfielder Kyle Gorgol (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and assisting another to lead the Titans to a 4-0-0 start this season.
